How I feel about Valentines day THIS year

Every year my opinion about Valentines day is different.  In all my 28 years on this lovely planet Earth, it’s ranged from scorn, contempt, or dread to excitement and happiness.

This year, I am somewhere in between neutral and semi-excited.

It’s our 8th Valentines day together (our 9th anniversary occurs in March). That’s a pretty decent chunk of time! But what is more amazing is that given all of the changes we’ve been through together (undergrad, grad school, moving, becoming obsessed with cycling together) it actually seems like a pretty short amount of time. There’s so much more I want to do, and I’m looking forward to doing it with my weirdo partner… =)

"We are all a little weird, and life's a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it LOVE." - Dr. Seuss

We decided to get each other something this year. Our past decisions have ranged from not even acknowledging that this “holiday” existed to going out for a nice dinner. But, as some of you may know, we’re pretty miserable and going through a major cycling withdraw. So why not use V-Day as an excuse to get other a little gift?

I got him a bike-themed gift (surprise!) and then I asked him he got me something that is related to bikes. Guess what–he did!

So…cute bike things are coming our way tomorrow! Can’t wait to see what I get, and I sure hope he likes his gift. Ya know…I wouldn’t be surprised if we went home for a visit and stumbled upon a How-I-Met-Your-Mother-Style intervention.

Ashley. Jason. This is an intervention to deal with your cycling obsession...

Concluding Thoughts

We both purchased our gifts on etsy.com. If you haven’t shopped at etsy before I highly recommend it. There are a ton of unique and customizable gifts out there. Buying stuff at the mall is rarely satisfying to us anymore–it’s all mass produced and just goes to support a big corporation. I always had a hard time shopping for him until I started browsing there. At etsy, it’s handmade goods made by one person or a small group of people (usually). However, the shipping time is kind of a hit or miss, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re short on time (unless the seller really promotes FAST SHIPPING and has lots of RECENT feedback to confirm it!)

Thanks for reading!! And Happy Valentines Day (Or not…you know, whatever)

COMMENT ON YOUR THOUGHTS!

  • What are your plans or what did you do for Valentine’s day this year?
  • What do you think about Valentine’s day? Feel free to vent about how much you love OR hate it!
  • Would it be weird or creepy to celebrate V-Day with your pets? I feel kinda bad that I didn’t get Mr. Potato Lump (a.k.a. The Dog) anything. Maybe he’ll get some extra apples tomorrow.

  1. If you guys can give each other the gift of cold weather gear you won’t have to go through so much cycling withdrawal. Where I live it was sunny and 50 yesterday, a perfect day for a ride. Tomorrow on V-Day I plan to ride my bike if the forecast holds up. We always have a nice meal at home, along with good wine. Hope your Feb. 14 is perfect!

    • Hmmm…or perhaps the gift of living in an area like that?! Nice! 50 degrees?

There are a few reasons we don’t ride in the winter–(lack of) gear is a reason but not a main one.

…our unreasonable hatred towards weather below 60 degrees and the fact that I am personally offended when it snows are more of the cause :)

And that sounds really nice!!! :) happy vday to you and hope you also have a perfect day!!

  2. My girlfriend and I have a Valentine’s Day tradition of going to…wait for it… Chipotle! We can go to a fancy restaurant any time of the year, so we kind of think it’s crazy to try to fight the crowds. Plus we get a kick out of going on a date to Chipotle.

    • So I read this earlier….then had a craving for chipotle and had to go. Yummmmmmm

And I’m so with you! Go to the fancy-pants place when there arent the crowds. Somewhere quick and quiet sounds good to me!!

  3. Hate Valentine’s Day; love my Valentine. Fortunately she’ll put up with my default gift: poetry, with or without rhyme. Or reason. We’ve been pedaling in tandem, on tandem, since the late 1980s. The journey of a thousand miles is just for starters, evidently.

  4. I planned to cook dinner for us on Valantine’s Day, which is special because I am NOT a cook, but after the big mess I made trying to cook something yesterday, my wife thought it would be better if we went out. So I made reservations at a nice Itallian Restaurant.

I am just wondering what I missed. Why are you going through bike withdrawals?

    • Hahah! Yea…going out is for sure easier than having a mess to deal with! Have a nice time!!

Oh, yes. Withdrawal–that’s because we live in Michigan and (as mentioned on a previous reply to another commenter) we are NOT fans of the winter. And michigan isnt a fan of keeping roads safe enough for us in the winter, either. So we haven’t ridden in months. Kinda driving us insane.

Plus I always go a little insane during the winter…never liked it even though I grew up in the Midwest.

      • Yup, been following him for a while. I admire him greatly. I am sure that one day we will both be riding more during the cold. We tend to last longer in the fall and start earlier in the spring, so eventually …

So you grew up near Chicago? We did too. That’s actually where we are from, and will be moving back soon. Can’t wait to go HOME!

  5. My plan for valentine day? Drug and hiking!! HAHAAHAH Just kidding about the former. Definitely going hiking! It’s too muddy to ride mountain bikes. And I hate V-day! Sorry, not sorry. :)

  6. Never really been big on it, but it seems a bigger deal here in France (St Valentin), so we are just having a nice dinner at home (actually nothing unusual there) and a bottle of sparkling from a local winery :)

    • It’s hard to imagine it being a bigger deal anywhere else, with it being crammed down our throat EVERYWHERE! Your plans sound nice, and it’s ever better that it’s not out of the ordinary.

  7. My hubby had a migraine and so I barely saw him. It was a good valentines ;)

I just think that if you need a special day in which to do nice things for your loved one you need to re-look at your relationship. We should all be doing nice things all of the time (there are many disclaimers to this last sentence but you get what I mean).

    • hah, awww. That sounds…um…don’t know what to say! haha.

Here here, I agree! If one or both can only muster up enough strength to be kind on special holidays, then there is something wrong there. It should be a positive relationship the rest of the year as well!
